UK Decay:::Re-Mixed!!!

"THE UK DECAY"
A week or so ago a package arrived in the post containing a ‘mystery’ CD.
On opening the elaborately printed letter, we were even more mystified
when out popped a well put together CDR complete with printed label and
cover.
It was innocuously titled ‘The UK Decay’! We were puzzled, looking at the
track list there were familiar titles but on closer inspection we saw they
were all slightly twisted!
‘The Black Cat’ for instance had become ‘The Black Gatch’ ‘Unexpected
Guest’ had lost the ‘Guest’ and so on!
One intrigued werewolf very quickly placed the CDR into the player and
sat back and waited for it to start.
The first track that was titled ‘The Carnival’ on the track list, started with
obvious crowd noises, could have been from the Luton Carnival gig, who
knows. Then the Bass line from ‘Deca Danse’ kicked in to the sound of
someone munching sarnies, then it faded out as quickly as it ha kicked in!
What was this?

The 2nd track ‘the Black Gatch’ then kicked in, arhh Steve’s familiar Tom
roll at the beginning of ‘The Black Cat’ but hang on! I am sure it shouldn’t
go on for more than a few seconds! Anyway after about a minute, it
banged into ‘the Black Cat’ proper with a ‘phazy’ twist ending with a
‘J Arthur Rank’ style gong. What was going on!?
Song 3 ‘Unexpected’ started with the well known intro, sort of distant and
muffled so I turned up the monitors only to be shaken by a thunderclap,
this was followed by a shower of rain with Abbo’s haunting hollowing’s
fading into the distance.

For my Decayed’ well, a fans ear view of this favourite with ‘decayed’
transposed over ‘country’, quite cleverly. There is kind of ‘morphing’
between a ‘live’ FMC and the traditional version with a long ‘delay’
substituting the ‘decay ‘maybe?! Interesting
‘Dorianagain’ starts with that well-haunting piano cadence as per usual
then the bass and drums roll in followed by more haunting Abbo, cant
quite put my finger on what exactly different about this until a slower
and deeper piano drifts in then it all goes into some kind of ‘dark -acid
influenced dream sequence’ with scrunched whispery tones.
It’s end had the effect of a mechanical music box unwinding its way till it
slows down to a stop. Hmmm!

The rear Cover with Track List
Before it stops those familiar opening chords of ‘Sexual’ kick in,
called ‘Sexual Healing’ on this presentation. Its much the same as the
original except magnified! Quite a crisp version again the sound has been
given a ‘treatment’ of some sort but its twice as long!
Then, hang on! The familiar opening of wait for it..’Bela Lugosi’s Dead’!
What’s going on here? Where’s Pete Murphy ? no he is not there instead
in the ‘strangeness’ yes that’s the ‘Guest’ appearance of Abbo! Titled
‘The Guests Dead this track mixes Bauhaus and UK Decay! That’s a first
Oh and Pete makes an appearance right at the end!
‘The Stage Struck’ opens with swelling guitars with those ‘na na see mee
na na to go’ devil voices which reappear occasionally throughout this
heavily phased driven version.

What have we next ‘The Twist’ starts with that pounding military snare
roll from our Steve again and it carry’s on with ‘Moonlight sonata’ piano
drifting in and whats that?..could it be Pneumanias ‘Exhibition’ scratched
over the top? The snare rolls on then the bass drop and again and again!.
Finally launching into ‘Twist of the Tail’ proper, but that ‘moonlight sonata’
is still there! In fact it ends on it! A very interesting juxtaposition.

Then the last track ‘The Decca Danse’ starts in the usual way until
the man munching his sarnies makes his reappearance along with the
‘carnival’ crowd! The ‘Decca Danse’ comes and goes amidst crowd
ambience then finally goes!
What are we to make of all this? Who is the mystery remixer? And where
does it all go from here? Frank was puzzled as to the motive and
Spon was too ‘gobsmacked’ for words!
But I think it is rather nice! Encouraging to think someone would go to
all that trouble to put this together.
If we could speak to the ‘perpetrator’ of this in fact It would be
interesting to stream some of these mixes on the site!
Would anyone out there like that?
Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
