The Nissan Hut Marsh Farm

The Nissan Hut Today
Venue of the legendary 1979 Crass, Poison Girls and
UK Decay gig.

Click for larger view

The Flyer for that gig.

This was an extraordinary venue that was chosen for
that most memorable event.
The only time Crass & Poison Girls ever played in
Luton. It was set up as a benefit gig for the Cobalt Hate
fanzine. Unbelievably, 250 anarcho Punx squashed into the hut
to witness the live action.
It was at a heightened time of tension in town between Punks
and Skins and everybody was expecting a visit from the 'Bone-eds'
When they did arrive, they were duly chased off!
At the time UK Decay were involved in the Fanzine co-operative
hence the benefit gig for Cobalt Hate who's writers were
'unfairy victimised' by the authorities.
It is unsure how much 'benefit' was made for the Fanzine but
the gig cemented a relationship between the 3 bands that would
continue for another 3 years!
Bernard Chandler who played Bass? I think for the Poison Girls
would later design the artwork for The UK Decay covers,
For Madmen Only, Sexual and Rising from the Dread

Crass and particularly Penny Rimbaud would later form
Chorpus Christie Records on which the Rising from the Dread
EP was released.

Also it cemented in peoples minds the idea that these
3 bands were related to the same idiom.
An idea that was later to prove a double edged sword!

It is not known if there were any more gigs in the old World War
Nisan Hut.

The Plume is no longer Shock!

The Plume of Feathers August 2004
Then it was about open as 'The Nine Bar'

The Plume of Feathers September 2005

and

The Plume of Feathers September 2005

The 'Plume' has just been demolished! a sad moment
as we managed to capture the demolishers putting their
finishing touches to this once popular venue.
They actually built this corner of the Arndale carpark around the
'Plume' in the 60's now all thats left is a gaping hole!

The Plume of Feathers R.I.P.

I vagually recall an upstairs bar between Sands and the labour club called Faurs. The Teevees were the resident band.

It was not strictly a punk venue as the music was more jazz based but it was certainly a klate night watering hole for a while.

The Church up by the labour club (now demolished i think) housed a few bands.

I remember Essential Logic were scheduled to play there on a few occassions but it was always cancelled. The Acme Attractions also played there once at least to my knowledge.

The ‘Bag Shop’ Wellington Street, Luton, has now been demolished!

Weds 24th May 2006. The end of 'Ye Olde Bag Shop' !
No doubt we shall shortly see another 500 shoe-box flats taking it’s place
As has been the case in recent years with most available derelict buildings
and land in Luton.

The 'Bag Shop' in 2004
The ‘Bag Shop’ was the place where Punky types’ from all over the
Home Counties acquired many a fine ‘Luton studded leather Belt’.
Not sure when it ceased trading but up until April 2006 it remained like
the ‘Mary Celeste’ gathering dust and haunted by the still furnished shop
windows complete with Bags, Belts and 30p watch straps!

The Watchstraps have been put to rest!
Another piece of old Luton now sadly gone!
Like the fast disappearing Pubs, Petrol stations, corner shops, Bakeries,
Greengrocers, Car manufacturers, engineering firms, manufacturing
industry et all, our venues one by one are now vanishing as we drive
into the 21st century.
Trouble is with Luton’s population skyrocketing they are building masses
of new ‘shoe boxes’ and ‘rabbit hutches’ for people to live in. Many of
these new housing projects are designed for transitory purposes as
students and immigrant workers who have no actual desire to remain in
the town fuel Luton’s new population explosion.
We are in danger of loosing what little culture and soul that Lutonians
could previously proudly boast!

‘Watching it waste away..
see the UK decay’

Oh well, better get real!

On another tip........Cristchurch
Pete Brennan wrote:

It's actually still there, well kind off!

The Christchurch, Upper George st. Luton. May 24th 2006
The Christchurch at the top of Upper George, previously, yes you
guessed…A Church (another disappearing institution!) Before it was
converted into prime office space, for a short time it became a live
music venue. Think it was run by a Mr. Madden who owned a recording
studio in Brantwood road.
Local Punk band ‘The Traitors’ come to mind as playing there but that’s
it as far as I can remember. Can anyone fill us in with any other bands
that played there?

OK so long for now, there is more to be added including the Kingsway
Arms, The Pink Elephant and a church in Marsh Farm!

I don't know about now but I think Luton used to strive to be the antithesis of culture. There seemed to be no imagination or desire to break from bleakness. You were expected to work as part of the Vauxhall production line or one of its feeding companies; alternatively there was the airport, with the same functional mentality.

The arts in Luton were seriously underfunded (massive mistrust of 33 by the local council), bands would rarely, if ever come to Luton on tour and anyone daring to look slightly different would be regarded as a criminal and/or fair game for a good kicking. Luton Carnival was a few tents and tables in the street - more like a village fete - and the music bit of it was briefly tolerated.

Of course, there were rare exceptions that this site testifies to but my lasting impression of Luton, at least from the eighties, is that it seemed to try it's hardest to become as much like Slough as possible.

Dave put us on there at least 5 times between 1986 - 1989

Citizen Fish
Christ on parade
mega city 4
screechrock (Like Rubella ballet, they glowed in the dark)
Chillum squad
Cowboy killers
Die Kreuzen
and
strangest of all, the lesbian nude dance ensemble doing 'spinning spiders' a nude poem and dance effort which we really could not top as a spectacle...Humble punk group that we were.

Dave is very sadly missed, I hadnt seen him since about 1990 when he invited Junior and me to a sort of romp in some woods around MK./..
Cant remember much, but it was an amazing doss.....

See you in Heaven Son. You were the best
