Jay, the nouvelle vague stuff is pretty good, makes me smile every time I play their version of just cant get enough.
And blink, the steely dan/steelye span one gets me every time. I remember many years ago, at my first place of employment, working with someone who told me he was into steely dan. He get more and more pissed off as I sang 'all around my hat' whenever he passed me after that. I dont really know the Dan, as Danny Baker refers to them, but I understand they are a to be respected white soul or jazz rock outfit and to some Donald Fagin is some kind of god.
Anyone use last fm and audioscrobbler here? if not you should give it a go, its great fun and you can see who listens to what and who has similar tates. Go to www.last.fm and take a look.
BTW, am now into some wierd (for me) stuff; it's almost happy in feel. These would include The Shins, Bright Eyes, Her Space Holiday and The Postal Service. For those into old style garage rock The Ponys are worth a listen (remind me of Blood and Roses back in the day, before I understood that they were essentially garage rock). _________________ were still living with the english fear |

Not that i play it that often, but just a thought......Some of the old punk still sounds good , and some definitely doesn't ! Was i really pleased to have bought the UK Subs 'Stranglehold' on red vinyl ? Oh dear, I was. However, some stuff still sounds good now, and i still play it.....
The Banshees 'Scream album, 999's Homicide, Feeling alright with the crew, Emergency etc., The Stranglers first two LP's, The Pistol's Never Mind The Bollocks, Iggy Pop The Idiot and Lust For Life LP's and of course The Stooges, MC 5, Ultravox's first Lp - the wild the beautiful and the damned, Dangerous Rhythm etc., X Ray Spex LP, The Saints LP, The Cure's Pornography LP, Suicide's LP, The heavier Antz stuff, mostly B sides- whip, physical, young parisians etc., The Clash first 3 Lp's....
Well, i could go on or get into some singles that i still play (Dangerous Girls anyone ?) but i won't. What legends have i missed, or is the above list rubbish ? i like it.......J x. |

I've recently started buying 80's punk of ebay on cd so I can Reminisce. Does anyone remeber the 'Apocolypse Now Tour' 1980. Discharge, Anti-Nowhere League, Exploited, Anti-Pasti and Chron Gen. Had Discharge Hear No See No for ages and is still great. Anti Pasti 'Last Call' still good, however The exploited 'Punks Not dead' is the biggest pile of shite in existance. "Were the barmy army dont try and mess" and Messy Pup "Well I pick my nose and I eat it up I'm a real humdinger I'm a messy pup" wot a twat Wattie was/is. My 4 year old could write better lirics. Besides these The Ramones god bless them, still sound good. Joey's last recording was excellant. Never Mind The Bollocks is still the greatest album ever made.

Couldn't agree more about the exploited and never mind the bollocks. 'Bodies' still puts a shiver up my spine. A friend of mine offered me a ticket to see the anti nowhere league the other week. I declined. The first time round they were fun, but now........'Sit around the house in your dirty clothes, looking a mess you're always picking your nose'. Do you think he was mates with Wattie ? One of my daughters asked me if they were a joke. Hmmm...............j x. |

Well I think quite a number of the second generation punk bands (exploited, ANL plus others) were a bit of a joke. A lot seemed happy to be a parody of punk (inspired, it would appear, more by kenny everett's Sid Snot character than by the cult of the individual as subscribed to most of the first wave of punk bands) rather than use punk for what it was originally intended (in my opinion), as an outlet for individualism and creativity. In retrospect, the crooning of Vic Goddard was always much more punk than idiot boy wattie ever could be, I would go as far to say that early 'new romantics' were more punk than the exploited. Thank heavens this wasnt the only branch on the tree of second generation punk, as we also had the anarcho-punk brigade of crass, poison girls etc. and those of a more inspired persuasion (and perhaps a slight art school, even if metephorically, approach) like bauhaus, southern death cult, blood and roses and, of course, UK Decay.
This stuff I still largely find listenable today, although it was good (positive punk anyone?) for only a short time. As soon as other bands (specimen, fields of the nephilm, sisters of mercy and countless others) started evolving into the Goth movement, as we know it today, quality control began to slip and hammy theatrics take over.
Out of all the music from that period though, the one album I own that has aged best, and still sounds fantastic today, is no doves fly here by the mob. |

Just to add to my post above (posted before I signed in, doh!) I see that one of the bands mentioned, a band that I was really into at the time (saw them about 20 times i guess, although not at the infamous Luton College refrectory gig with UK Decay) Bauhaus, have announced a tour in February including 4 large venues in the UK.
Should I pay the 20 quid and go, hmmmm, what does anyone think. Can you go back and still be OK? Personally I am doubtful but extremely curious. _________________ were still living with the english fear |

Yep - stump up the cash!
Bauhaus played a reunion gig @ Brixton Academy about 5 years ago, they were storming.
Daniel Ash is a guitar god.
One of the best gigs I've ever been to. _________________ There are times when I am quietly impressed by my powers of forgetfullness. |

I'm sure the lyrics have been cut on ANL "Animal", maybe it was just when they played live but the words"I'm your next door neighbour" were "I'm a child molestor". Obviously not very pc.
On a completely different note Bauhaus were/are excellant. bela lagosi's dead ,terror couple killed colonel and funeral rose garden to mention a few are awesome tracks
