It was an early one and like Sonny's Burning, whether you liked it or not, it grabbed your attention from the beginning. Also, the title's a bit of a give-away...

I think testament sounds pretty gothic in a classic way.
the guitars remind me of early cure/banshees. Unfortunately
I find it hard to get any albums of U.K. Decay. But
the black cat e.p. is some nice piece of gothic punk I think.
regarding goth godfathers: Killing An arab by cure sounds
like one of the first goth tracks to me. They played
it in a Peel-session by the end of 1978. Another of that time, though
very unknown, might be Faded Smiles.
I have always wondered why "Arab" or later "A forest", first
played in concert in late 79, have not been explicitely called gothic
when they came up. maybe their first album 3 imaginary boys
is to blame which is filled with some powerpop tunes.
U.K. decay is often mentioned along with bands like bauhaus,
Sex Gang, Southern death cult, killing joke, theatre of hate.
the cure was not compared to those bands back then. why not?
Is cure so far away from them? I donīt think so.
But I donīt know how cure was defined/received at that time.
Do you ?

I don't recall The Cure ever being explicitly connected with the scene, even though I believe Robert Smith (at least) did frequent the Batcave, and Faith (to a lesser extent) and Pornography do fit the bill.

A lot of the contemporary reviews made a point of comparing their stuff to TIB, so you're probably on to something with that theory.

Oh yes, the Three Johns, totally under-rated and almost forgotten it seems these days. They seemed to be everyone's support band. And to think they used a drum machine...

Smile)
love 'em! it's that "norther sound" that came from bands from the same area like RLYL and Sisters to mention the more "famous" ones.
I'll be playing te three Johns on friday, just hope people will apreciate that :p
what about Ghost Dance? Ann Marie being , with Chrissy Fiend (alien Sex Fiend, another band worth to mention!) , one of the most attractive ladies of the scene as far as I'm concerned Smile))
