Last year's January 2007 REUNION II

'Rising from the Dead'- after nearly 25 years UK Decay back on stage in Luton!!

What a night! What a buzz!

Brilliant night. Excellent bands. DK playing too was the icing. Thoroughly
enjoyed it, as did my lad.
(Bugsy)

What an excellent night! What a hangover! All those face from the
past - un-fucking-believable!
(Baby Ray)

A night of reminiscence, that was for me.
I saw concepts and ideals that I've always had only in my mind/soul
became reality for a night.
 (Scary Girl)

A bloody amazin fantastic night. (Sandra)

The vibe through the night was just fantastic, obviously helped by
the surprise performance of UK Decay themselves.
Believe me people, if you didn't bother coming, you missed a night of
history in the making.
 (Nephilimbabe on the Coven blog)

The above comments sum up the feelings of most of those who attended
last Saturdays "Class of 1978-1989 Reunion II" at the Hat Factory Art
Centre in Luton.

The venue was packed by 8.30pm as Jesus Christ Supercharger took
the stage, by now most had realized that something special was in the
offing.
Generations of punk and alternative culture were arriving from the four
corners of the land, many from the legions of the old Luton/area UK DK
tribes and many from the neo generations of punk urbane-ology.

This was to be a Night for Celebration  a night to remember;
a night to reminisce and above all, a night to recall the old spirit and inject
into the new.

Things were hooting up at the door as the sound check time over ran but
patience was rewarded as Jesus Christ Supercharger opened the evening
with their brand of garage surf. Ex Paschendale-Party Girls
guitarist Johnny G, lacerating those twangy licks, over Baby Rays and
Dan-the-Mans impeccable slabs of rhythm, they provided an intelligent
yet poignant portent for what was to come.

After a brief break, MC Dreg announced to an anticipant by now throng
that there was to be an Unexpected Guest to the occasion, then unbelievably
UK Decay took the stage! There was a dazzle
of camera flashes and mobiles held high as Abbo and the boys took the
stage. It was to be a short if you blinked you would miss it affair but as
Abbo uttered those immortal words For-My-Country, the buzz
exploded!
For a couple of minutes, we were thrust back a quarter of a century to
the heyday of DK, it was clear that the spirit was still as vibrant now as
it ever was. Sitting on the late Steve Harles stool was Baby Ray, a
perfect replacement it turned out. On bass was Martin Segovia Smith and
on Guitar, Steve Spon. Abbo thrust the microphone far out to into the
audience who sang their hearts out along to the bands most famous
mantra. Given the hasty nature of this last minute inclusion to the
proceedings, UK DK had sadly only prepared the one song for the show
and stumped for the encore, they simply replayed For My Country once
again! Every moment of the performance, was lapped up by the tribe
and then the band departed!
This was a moment many had thought would never happen and here it
was! Unbelievable!

Next on was Lutons neo-punk; The Adenoids who looked spectacular
with their Mohawks, Kilts and studded leather wear!
Their music heralds the now generations tribute and attitude to the punk
culture, perfectly summing up the original punk ethos.
They reminded some of us older lot of the way that we used to be, albeit
with a modern twist! They were fun and were joined, for a couple of songs
by Matt Rogue, another Luton Punk legend in the making.

Next were UK DK reunion regulars now called Los Cyclones, who
presented a blistering set of Storming garage punk and raw soul. This
was Luton Face Blink Pokers new band, now hailing from Leicester
and they delivered!

The final band was Norwichs Hot-Wired who again looked spectacular,
they provided a moshing finale to the live-bands part of the evening.
Sadly i didnt catch much of their set but judging by the atmosphere and
comments made by others, they provided an admirable climax to the live
sets!

Because the live sets had over-run sadly the DJs sets got squeezed to
about 40 mins each between DJ Nick Switch and Nephilimbabe whom
quickly got the crowd dancing all over the area on Basement one
including the stage! With a mix of Punk and post punk classics, the room
was a riot of old and new punks throwing themselves around in
exuberance! Sadly again, before we new it the time was up, this party
could have kept going forever, but hey! don't the very best moments
always come to an end whilst the iron is at it's hottest?

DJ Bonzi and Andy Attick provided some classic tunes
in-between the bands and it would have been great to have had them
play longer as well, but that was the tome of the night!

In Basement Two, the video footage created a backdrop of images from
the-days-of DK, with video Jock, Matty; who had spent several sleepless
nights trying to make sense of VOBs, rippers et all, in order to prepare
the presentation of the old footage.

Scores of fascinated old and new faces pored over UK Decay at
Luton Carnival and the Werewolf video
etc. The old faces spotting their
younger faces in the crowd and the newer faces, checking out how the
older lot did it!
With Sandra and Caroline working on the merchandise counter and the
settee-furbished archways, this area provided a perfect escape from the
frantic-exuberations of Basement One. The promised second projector
did not happen but it mattered not as it the material planned for this was
simply played back during the intermissions on the main projector.

The Eighties Anti-Nirex Dumping it on Parliament album was played
back on the sound system, which included a score or more of punk and
alternative Luton bands.

Finally and intriguingly, a half hour set of Drum and Bass and ambient
dub from (ex-UK Decay) Steve Spons, Nostramus provided a progressive
alternative to the punky culture in the other area. Many punks later
moved into rave culture and particularly Drum n Bass asserted Steve
Spon.

At the end of the night, the Hat Factory was in a state of devastation!
The event proving to be one of the busiest they have ever had! There
was a romp of broken glasses, spilt drinks, and even fag buts; in a
non-smoking venue! Someone sadly had broken a glass door and
someone had nicked some coffee mugs and a spout from the caf above.
But nothing will take away the sheer vibe and buzz of that evening!
We even had an artist-in-residence Hugh Byrne who has made some
fantastic montage artwork from the evenings proceedings.

Roll on Class of 1979 1989 Reunion III!

UK Decay Communities presents a
'Celebration of Punk & Alternative music from Luton 1978 - 1989.
4 Live punk bands, followed by DJs, rare UK Decay & other Luton punk film footage from the 80s

What's happening?

In Basement One
Live entertainment will include top Luton punk band, 'The Adenoids', who will be bringing their
colourful anarchic style to the punky mela and ex Lutonian punk, Blink's new Leicester band '
Los Cyclones' described as "a lethal cocktail of wild rock'n'roll, storming garage punk and raw
soul with a dark twist". .
Now we can add to that 'Jesus Christ Supercharger', a three piece comprising of 'ex'-'Baby Ray'
Philpot, on drums, 'JohnnyG' on guitar and 'Dan-the-Man' on bass.
All three, played in the well-known 80's Luton band, 'The Party Girls', in the mid-eighties.
They will be bringing to the party a 'Surf Punk' flavour. Finally one of East Anglia's top
contemporary punk bands 'Hot-Wired' from Norwich will wind up the live
proceedings before the DJ's take the floor.

The live entertainment kicks of in the Hat Factory's 'Basement one' venue at 8pm and runs till
11.30pm, after which the bands give way to DJ's playing a variety of punk and alternative
music from the late 70's till today!

DJ Nick 'Switch' from the legendary 'Switch' club that ran for nearly 15 years in Luton from the
mid 80,s will be providing a taste of the Switch club alongside DJ Nephilimbabe who will be
providing a taste of darker beats from today's premier Luton alternative club 'The Coven'.
DJ Bonzi
from Northampton's Roadmenders will also be adding to the occasion.

In Basement Two

In this area, there will be an opportunity to relax and view on a large screen, rare footage
of UK Decay at Luton Carnival 1982 and at Dingwalls in 1981, Bowes Lyon in Stevenage,
and other classic UK Decay film. Also screened will be footage from other Luton/area punk/
alternative bands from the 80's including, Bone Orchard & the Party Girls at the Library
Theatre in Luton in 1984, Click Click at Lung Function (mid 80's), IN Excelsis at the Venue,
London in 1985 and Furyo at Tropicana beach (1985). Later a 'chill out' DJ set from (ex UK Decay)
Spon AKA Nostramus and other guests will provide a 'chill-out' alternative
environment.

Any other Luton/area Punk footage?
May I take this chance to put out a shout to anyone whom may have
video footage of any other of the Luton/area Punk-New Wave bands
from the late 70's and 80's, we would also love to hear from you and
to show this on the night!
We have already heard a rumour that Dan from 'The Party Girls' may
have some footage from the Party Girls supporting Bone Orchard at
the Luton Library Theatre gig C1984!

but there is stuff out there!
