I only remember them from your house and being surprized even then by how a bunch of US goths and former Cramps associates had ended up in a Luton suburb. Was it because they liked UK Decay and reasoned that therefore Luton must be a happening place? If so Leagrave must have been a bit of a disappointment.

They were colleagues of "Sharon" (IIRC her name) from the ABC cinema, and there were a couple of rooms going in their house. I'd heard one of their records on John Peel so like you was surprised, not so much that they'd come to Luton (convenient for London) but out there in Leagrave.

Funnily enough during that time, I rarely saw them except sometimes to catch the late bus home (they worked evenings of course) and never talked about music with them at all.

I didn't stay in the flat too long - it was too far away from the centre of Luton and meant "expensive" bus fare or lots of walking.

When I think back to my time in Luton, it was like Tess of the d'Urbervilles, just WALKING everywhere. Leagrave to George St? Couple of hours. Stopsley-Barnfield? 3 hour round trip if you got bored of the same route and came back "the long way". Up and down hills like a Hovis advert.

Just found a note in an old notebook that I went to see The Veil play at the Switch some time in 1986, after a drink at the Biscot Mill (must have been when I was living in High Mead, but don't have the date)

Just looked through your Transpontine blog Neil (too much to read in one go, not to mention the archives. By coincidence you mention Test Department, who did a gig in Bedford during the Miners Strike. I can't remember the name of the Venue now, something like Boys Club or Scouts Club or something silly.

The Cocteau Twins and (IIRC) Dead Can Dance also did a "secret gig" in Bedford in the eighties. I'm not 100% sure DCD played but they were there as record label 4AD brought up a coach from London for it!
