The '33 Arts Centre' pictured in 2004

The final days of the buiding which housed the former '33 Arts Centre'
are upon us as an application has gone in this weeks Luton News to
demolish the premises!
It is not clear what they intend to do with the site once it's
demolished...another 500 shoebox flats I suppose!
It is true the building is in a bad state of repair and something needed
doing to the old building, but the erection of new flats although arguably
needed will just add to the sense that Luton centre is becoming a
'dormitory desert'!!
The life of '33' although at times troubled provided many Lutonians
with a platform to move on to greater things (Danny Cannon, Dave
Arnold etc...UK Decay and many other artists!)
Most of what was left in the old building, including the old piano in
the 'Caberet' room has now been moved round the corner to the
'Hat Factory' (Luton's new Art Centre!) The piano will be renovated
and re-situated in the live performance space.
We had one last chance recently to tour the inside of the old building
where the ghost's of many memories traced both sad and happy
recollections in the minds of our party. A good part of Luton's recent
historical art and music culture grew out of that instition, where it not
for the existence of '33' undoubtably many of Luton's finest bands and
other artists would simply not have had the facillities ie rehearsall rooms
recording studio, video department, live performance space etc etc to
having., to gain a foothold on to higher things!
Previous to becoming the '33 Art Centre' the building was utilised as
a wharehouse, Hat Factory (real one!) and apparently a school!

I think it will be a sad thing to see flats or mundane offices go up
in its place, this area of Luton dominated by the repungent Berlin-wall
arse end of the Arndale centre needs brightening up..turning this area into
a dormitory is yet again an example of dire planning mis-management
that has continually raped the people and landscape of Luton for the
last 150 years or so.

In the early 90's the '33 Art centre' at no small cost put in a proposal
to demolish the site and rebuild a purpose built new Centre on the
same site. That was turned down on the grounds that the new building
would 'infringe' upon the council and rivers authority long term plan
of opening up the River Lea (which backs onto the premises) and
landscaping it with Bistro's and pleasant walkways!
At the time '33' were pissed of but appreciated that it was for the better
good! Unfortunately suprise! that never happened! and the River Lea
that runs through Luton Town centre is becoming increasingly
culverted, with plans for the new nearby 'Halo' shopping complex about
to 'submerge' another several hundred yards of the river!

Also not many know that Guildford Street is now actually the start
of the A6 highway! That begins on the church street/guildford street
roundabout!
Perhaps the authorities that be in Luton should consider building a
monument to '33' on the site of the old Art Centre? Laughing

I think it should be a recording studio and cafe built there with the river as a feature of the place not more shoe box flats the council will make luton town centre an even more boring dull looking place the Philistines Shocked why dont luton people seem to get a say as to what is built in their town??.

It might be worth mentioning that the Black Horse is once again friendly to alternative types. I was there for Steppy's birthday. Weird to be back in there aftertwenty years or so....

No one's mentioned the Nickle Bag or am I drunk already? Around '85 - '86. I actually worked there for a very brief period of time. I remember spending more time watching the video jukebox playing Bauhaus 'Telegram Sam' etc than actually working. Then it was off the the Elephant and Tassle for a good nights stomping. Shame I can't remember most of it due to the substances available!!! Laughing

The Arts Centre - good god. One of my boyfriends band used to practise there and another used to go to acting workshops on a Saturday. Oooooh - ex boyfriends Wink

Anyone who frequented the Blockers circa 81 - 83 remember a song that used to be played every Friday / Saturday (alongside GINA X)? The only thing I can remember was that it was either called , or by , something like Way Of The West? Any ideas?

Def wasn't that - it was more of an indie dance type effort.
