News Feeds, RSS, Add to my Google, Add to my Yahoo etc

We have now extended the RSS News Feed system, which up till now has
only been available in the galleries to contain News and Articles
from the forums and website as a whole. The growing popularity
of RSS, ATOM and other Readers which make organising the regular
web conten that individuals use on a day to day basis, a whole lot easier.

As an example, take the BBC News front page with news stories popping
up all the time. By subscribing to the RSS feed in your chosen Reader,
instead of actually visiting the Beeb page, you would call up your Reader
and select the BBC front page feed.
A list will appear with the newest stories at the top, the oldest stories will
work their way to the bottom before eventually disappearing as the
latest stories are added.
As most web users regullarly visit many different sites, many of which
can now be syndicated using RSS or other feeding systems. You can build
up a list in the Reader of your own custom favourite sites and very quickly
click up al the very latest stories or other content that your favourite sites
post up!
RSS etc has been around for a few years now, our galleries have had it
for over a year! It is not a 'Compulsory' new way that everyone will get
on with indeed the first generation of readers actually made it 'hard work'
But now the Readers are getting their acts together! For anyone that is
familliar with GMAIL or YAHOO etc. They now both have online Readers
allowing users to access their customised readers anywhere they can
log on to their accounts.
I have been using Google Reader which comes with the gmail/googlemail
email account and it is really easy to use and usefull indeed!
Once logged onto the email account the reader is accsessible and it is a
question of cutting and pasting the url of the feed in the 'Add subscription'
field. The website that the feed links to now is available in the list and by
clicking on it I can see in a slimmed down Headline and Description
fashion, the last ten stories listed in a chronological descending order
list, with a quick link to the actual web site page.
The "Add to Google" icon below makes it even simpler, simply click on
the icon and it will 'subscribe' the page you are looking at to the Google
Reader. The same goes for Yahoo.
For those that are famillier with RSS, cut and past the url below into
your Reader

http://www.ukdecay.co.uk/mainfeed.rss

This is will add the News feed of the main UK Decay Communities website
to the Reader.

In the case of the below icons clicking on any of them will add the URL

UK Decay Communities News Feed

RSS

Add to Google

Add to My Yahoo!

You will now find these News Feed icons on our front pages and dotted
about the site

Did you know that you can also use 'RSS' to keep a check on the
Gallery updates?
The UK Decay Community Gallery is now 'RSS' complient so if you
have a 'RSS' reader you can use that to keep up to date with all the
latest updates!
Just click the little red 'RSS' icon at the bottom of the gallery page
and add it to your reader. You can either 'add' the whole Gallery,
or you can choose your favourite Gallery to add!
Whole UK Decay Community Gallery RSS
or cut and paste below url....

Google Reader Tour

Hope this has helped?

Server outage! getting back to normal!

Apologies to all who tried to access the website in the last few of day's to
no avail! The server has been down. Not sure what the problem was/is
but it is back up now which is great news!

UkDecay Communities as many will be aware is hosted by SDZ / Level-1.
and the server is based in Germany.
At 9.15am on wednesday 20th June the whole server went down along with
ourselves, Level-1, Blunt Beats and a couple of dozen other sibling websites.
After a couple of days of unsuccessful attempts to get the server back
online, on friday, things were looking pretty desperate so at lunchtime a
decision was made to wipe the machine and reinstall from backups.

This seems to have done the trick, although the downside is that we have
been 'rolled-back' a week/10 days or so, which means any additions and
post's made in that time have been lost.

Unlike previous occassions eg last years server hack, which literally
meant having to rebuild the whole website from scratch, loosing a few
posts is radically preferable to rebuilding the site again!

Nowadays the site is regularly backed up every couple of weeks so at
worst, we only loose the input since the last backup, which is what has
happened.

Again thanks and much respect to James and his team at SDZ for all
the hard work in getting the websites back online!

Now, there are a couple of post's that will have to be rewritten!

W.W.

Just a reminder

The animated 'gif' at the top of the forum pages contains a hyperlink
that will refresh to the main UK Decay Communities front page.
In other words by clicking this.....
UK Decay Communities Home page
You will return to the main front page.
(Think of it as being a 'Home' button)

Nice one!

New Forum, for 'Forthcoming live events'

About time something new happened around here I guess
So to kick off 2008 we have opened a new forum designed
specifically to cater for 'Forthcoming live events'.

This is aimed at bands and alternative promoters to get their gigs
advetised and hopefully add a drop of colour to an otherwise bleak
situation.
Seriously, there are so many new bands out there it would be really
interesting for the ex punk-now grumpy generation to get of their arses
now and then and go check out whats going on, perhaps find out what
their kids are up to! Furthermore underground music is now truly
multigenerational, it matters less today that what age the music or
listener hails from

As long as the music is alternative or underground and not blatantly
commercial, we do not care. Please feel welcome to let 300 people a
day and rising where your band is playing at. You will have to house
your picture banner or flyer elsewhere but you can address it here.

To place your flyer please click here

To veiw the new (Forthcoming live events) forum please click here

Happy flyer-ing!

UK Decay Communities website soon to be refurbished!

As we approach our fifth anniversary, it seems fitting that a fresh
lick of paint and renovation is surely in order.
It's hot news off-the-press and so can't divulge any more info at the current time.
But watch this space......................

New webfront <> UK Decay Communities 5th Anniversary

In case you haven't already noticed, we have changed the front page.

To celebrate our 5th Anniversary and also to reflect UK Decay's current
resurgence of activity, we are in the process of updating the website.

We hope the changes will clarify some of the complexity of the resource
and to make an easier online experience for our users.

The main changes involve a brand-new revamped homepage, which will
highlight the current and future activities of UK Decay. The old home
page shall be retained for the time being and a link to 'UK DK COM' can
be found at the top right of the page.

As soon as time permits the old home page will be redeveloped into a
UK Decay Communities- community page, with the emphasis on our
traditional Luton district / Punk community events and issues.

If anyone experiences any problems with the new front, please don't,
hesitate to let us know. It works fine here and both on IE and Firefox.
We also plan to update some of the older pages with the new look in the
near future.

The old UK Decay Home page

For a while now our Home page has needed looking at, for several
reasons..

The original missions of this website have nearly all been
fulfilled. UK Decay Communities has successfully re-united many of the
old tribe and has rekindled debate, both in our local area and across
into the wider international community.
The long awaited UK Decay back catalog CD album is now on the cusp
of release. This on the back of earlier members website releases, UKDK
Com has delivered!
There have been the hugely successful 'Class 1979/89 Reunion' events
but not even we could have foreseen the reemergence of UK Decay
itself!
This means that we now have to redefine a new mission in order to
take on board the re-awakening of the band. As after all, the website
domain is named after the band. So the front page must now reflect
new visitors expectations of reaching information about the bands current
and future activity.

Also after five years the old web build was rather creaking under the
strain. It was in need of regeneration

But all this does not mean we are going to ignore our community
mission. There will be more UK DK COM events, but not until 2010.
The last couple took six months each to plan and work towards, we
had to concentrate our energies on getting the band back on its feet
this year.

The old front of the website is currently still available, we have now
renamed it "UKDK COM" and it is available to the right of the "CONTACT"
button on the top right hand side of the new page.
Eventually we hope to re-invigorate this page and develop the
Luton/area punk and alternative communities from the 70's and 80's
theme. From here we hope that users will easily be able to reach
their favorite articles or fanzine, Faces galleries, radio streams etc.
For the time being however, it is the old home page with its familiar
links.

If anyone does have any comments or thoughts please feel free to post
reply below.

or email.

New Home page for 2010

Welcome to the 'new-look' updated UK Decay Communities website.

For some time now it has been obvious that the old web frames have needed an overhaul. At last we are beginning the process of rolling out a new framework to improve the user experience.

To begin with a new drop down menu under the masthead will aid the site navigation helping to guide the user to the right destinations.

There is a new Google site search customized for the entire UK Decay Com database that really works, is to be found at the bottom of the new pages, please give it a try - it really can find items or names buried deep within our vaults!

We have inline with web 2 social networking, integrated 'Share This' tabs to update the page onto Facebook and Myspace and a lot more SN sites or blogs. We have syndicated our Twitter and other feeds onto various pages, overall this will make updating the UK Decay Com web with the latest news or other information so much easier.

It's going to take a while to completely update the whole site, so please bare with us in the meantime.

The new mission will be be two main areas;
matters 'UK DECAY' (early period and contemporary)
and 'UK DECAY COMMUNITIES' (UKDKCOM) - the traditional database of Luton area post-punky people and bands.

This reorganization, when finished will be supplemented by over fifty new pages, with lots more content about the contemporary UK Decay, as well as a consolidation of UK Decay in the early period. In the meantime we have had to build in to the navigation, new pages that do not yet exist!

Please note: If you find a broken link in the new navigation system, its probably because we haven't filled in the page for it yet! So please check back later. Slowly but surely, we shall fill them in!

For an overall view of the new site-map, with information on the new pages, please click here

(Optimised for Mozilla Firefox)
Internet Explorer users, particularly 'IE6', may experience some problems on some of the pages. Again we shall get any problems sorted as soon as possible.
