Life starts between the twin bridges of Bury Park!

Paul Young was asked to comment but 'declined to comment'!

Includes some gorgeous inner city Luton nighttime shots!

Showing 'crap town' Luton in a new light
"Poor unloved Luton was recently voted "Britain's crappiest town" and
its media image veers from cheap 'n' cheerful Luton Airport to reports of police raids.
So when writer and broadcaster Sarfraz Manzoor was
commissioned
to make a documentary film about the town where he grew up, he was
determined to avoid the usual cliches."
Friday, 4 March, 2005,
17:48 GMT
From The BBC website

" What do you think of when you think of Luton?

Chances are it is one of the following: Lorraine Chase "wafting in" from
Luton Airport, the Vauxhall car factory or terror raids.

If you were feeling particularly cruel you might also point out that Luton
was recently voted the crappiest town in the country.

What you almost certainly won't think of is that Luton might make the
subject of an entertaining, amusing and insightful TV film. "

LUTON::"Luton Actually":
:::Saturday BBC2 March 5th 2005 10PM:::

I have seen a preview of this film and for all of you out there with an
interest in Luton 'matters' it's worth a watch if you can pick up BBC1.
It may potray the Luton you know and love in a different way from
what you may expect, with the perspective of a multicultural viewpoint.
No mention of Luton's Punk or Goth scene sad to say or come to that , the towns
historical importance in the 'underground' 'Rave' and 'Party'
scenes but still it is well worth a view! There is a look at then 'Hatter's'
Interestingly, on the BBC website there is a 'factfile'
Quote:
BIG MOMENTS IN LUTON HISTORY
6th Century: Saxons create a small settlement, a town near the River Lea, hence the name
1800s: Hat industry flourishes and inspires the "Hatters" nickname of the football club
1919: Disgruntled WWI servicemen burn down the Town Hall, as a pianist plays "Keep The Home Fires Burning" on an instrument looted from a shop
1938: Luton Airport puts the town on the international map
1970s: Eric Morecambe shoehorns a mention for his beloved Luton Town into every comic "play what Ernie wrote"
1983: Former Vauxhall employee Paul Young hits No 1 with Wherever I Lay My Hat
1988: Luton Town beat Arsenal 3-2 at Wembley to win the Littlewoods Cup
1990: One million people cram into the town centre to welcome plastic-breast-wearing Gazza and the England World Cup squad back home

I was staggered at the last point:...
Quote:
1990: One million people cram into the town centre to welcome plastic-breast-wearing Gazza and the England World Cup squad back home

I was there on the day, there were people rammed throughout the
whole City centre, on the streets and rooftops every window, every
place it was stacked! people from all across th UK had turned up to
welcome the England football squad, who had arrived back from their
recent successfull world cup competion.
I was proud to be a 'Lutonian' that day, even though the event was only
really made possible by the fact that the City's airport was by
convenience the 'airport of favour' used by the national squad.
But Were there really ONE MILLION PEOPLE there that day?
a many as that?
I find that staggering!
I was at the 1990 Trafalger Square poll tax demonstration and personally
estimated the crowd to be half a million. But the police and the press
only admitted there were were maybe 30 or 40 thousand people there!
But they are saying ONE MILLION for that day in Luton?
And does anybody remember "to welcome plastic-breast-wearing Gazza"?
That's the cherry on the cake, but the real champaigne is this fact:-
Quote:
1988: Luton Town beat Arsenal 3-2 at Wembley to win the Littlewoods Cup

That was another tumultuos event in the Town, In the City of Luton!
but thats another story!

HAHAHA, this reminds me of a funny incident. I was travelling around Thailand for a month (many years ago), and I met an Australian backpacker, who had`nt been home for about 5 years. I asked him if he ever felt like giving it all in and going home, this was his reply: `well....there was only once I seriously considered packing it all in, and going home, I was over in the UK, and was living in this place called Luton, I was staying in a bedsit, and was there about 3 months. It was the most miserable, depressing place I have ever stayed, I was very close to coming home. Oh how we laughed !!!!!

'Aliens choose Luton' as top town

Aliens choose Luton as top town BBC article

They are at it again!
The national media in their obsession with 'Crap Town' Luton,
have come up with another 'gem'!

In fact this story is about Luton fighting back with a book.
The book is called 'Junction 10' after the M! Luton South
Junction and is a collection of 10 stories based on Luton.

Luton First - the group behind the idea - believe so-called romantic
towns and cities owe more to poets, song-writers and authors than to
reality.

The tales were chosen after a national contest. One is about aliens
choosing Luton as an ideal landing spot.

This is the interesting bit......
"Sam Jordison, who wrote the tale about aliens, entitled Everyone Is
Welcome Here, was the editor of the Crap Towns report.

He has now revised his view of the town and believes it to be the most
inclusive place in the UK".

taken from the BBC article

Hmmmmm!

Sounds like there has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes here!

The Luton First group has been set up by the looks of things by
Luton Borough Council, (Echoes of 'Luton's Looking Up' (anyone
remmember that?) to promote the image of the Town.
here is their website if you wanna gander!
Luton First

We shall watch this for developements.

The Idea of Aliens choosing Luton as their landing spot is quite amusing
havn't they watched that movie where in the opening scenes,
Mel Smith & Griff Rees Jones crash land their spaceship on the M1
motorway just south of Luton (by Junction 10) can't remmember
what that movie was called 'Spaceballs' comes to mind but I don't thing
it was that!
Or Dinsdale blowing up Luton Airport on Monty Pythons Flying Circus?

Most amusing thing of all is the fact that most Lutonians wouldnt
bat an eyelid if they met an Alien in the street!
