Apologies but I've only just found this site. I can't believe it's been 10 years since Steve died, wow - I copied his drum patterns when I was learning to drum. He even taught me how to tune the things. Shit, I even ended up buying the old UK Decay drumkit and still have it!
I think of Steve quite often actually and it's good that he's kept alive here. |

Hello Werewolf
Sure I can take some pictures of Steve's kit - I've owned it for getting on 20 years now but still think of it as his. I bought it from Darren Wilkins who used to drum in Paschendale.
I also still see Dan and Jonny G on a regular basis and we're digging out some old Party Girls photos as we speak - we could also send some MP3s if you wanted. I noticed two of ours from a very early demo are already posted in another thread here - would that be OK? |

Steve's Tree March 12th 2006
On a bittery cold mid-march day 3 of us endured the siberian blast
to pay our homage to our dear late friend.
It is now 11 years since we heard that shocking news of his passing
in India 1995.
It was extreemly cold and we could only endure 10 minutes or so with
his spirit but noted that this time last year, his tree was already budding!
Spring is proving later this year here in the UK but we noted the tree is
in good condition and ready for the anual regeneration that spring brings!
Also shocking is the passing of time, 11 years!
We shall always remember!

Signs of Spring and a visit by another old friend!
Saturday 15th April 2006
'Baby' Ray Philpott, an old friend and proud owner of
Steve Harles drumkit, visited Steves Tree over the Easter
weekend. He had bought some beads from India to place
on the tree, as a mark of respect to his friend.
Pictured below with Tim Urry who now lives in a property nearby
Tim Urry left, Ray Philpott, right
Ray, having placed the beads on the tree remembers his old friend
Spring in Luton as well as the rest of northern Europe is late in 2006!
But now there are at last healthy signs of the anuall regeneration with
buds now flourishing!
Apologies again for the 'out-of-focus' feel!
Shall try and get some pics of the tree in bloom this year!
People keep asking, what species of tree this is?
Not that you can tell from these pics though!

Directions to Steves tree
There have been a few requests for a map of the location of Steves Tree.
This shot and map is courtesy of google-earth and is oriented standard
fashion, north to top.
The location is in Peoples park within the Hightown area of Luton.
You can open a 'Magic map' of this location here
(Confusingly, magic-map has 'peoples park' to the north...please ignore this;
It is the large open area to the north of 'North street!')
Click for larger view
The best place to park a car is Kingston road but check out the local
residents parking rules!! This whole area is chocked with residents
parking, so you mayhave to look around for a parking space!
As you can see from the map, there is a large open green space,
that is commonly known as 'Peoples Park', what Google Earth doesnt
show is (as these pics were taken 5 years ago) the new playground
built in the south western corner,,it's noted on the above map.
Also you can't actually see Steves Tree, it is in the shadow of the
tree, imediately to the right of the red arrow.
The light green area is a mown grass playing field which is disected by
a treeline and wooded area to the northern half. This is actually a
hillside which is not so evident from this ariel view.
Steves tree is aproximately midway up this hillside on a shortcut
pathway crossing a rellatively open area heading diagnally uphill
from the southwestern point towards Clarendon road.
The easiest aproach is from the pathway heading north near the
Arden Place flats on the end of Clarendon road
Heading north past the flats when you reach the steep bank at the
base of the hillside, take the right path up over the bank and past a
chair, ignore the older circular path going up the hill on the left but
watch for the rather more 'unofficial' looking path, again on the left,
shortly after, take that path. Steves tree is about 30 metres up that path
on the right.
From this vantage point there are excellent views towards luton town
centre and the south.
Depending on what time of the year you visit the tree, the local
environment may differ, during the spring the hillside is left to grow
wild followed in september by mowing.
Peoples Park-Popes Meadow and Wardown park are more or less
interconnected a pleasent green tongue in the dark heart of luton.
With walks and views One of the towns saving graces.
What a great place to cherish the memories of Steve Harle
Steve's tree!

Steve's Tree in the snow, February 6th 2009
As Luton just experienced it's heaviest snowfall since UK Decay
originally folded in 1982 - well something like that, we took a stroll
up to Steve's Tree.
Popes Meadow and Peoples Park has been transformed into a winter
playground, with kids of all ages enthusiastically finding whatever comes
to hand, to sit on and launch down the piste.
Snow brings out the child in us, never forget, that child is a big and
important part of us all. If we lose sense of that child, we are doomed
to an unremarkable existence and wishful-thinking old age.
So don't let the snow piss you off, have fun, free the 'child' in you!! lol
We are sure Steve would have!

I must say what a fitting place to remember Steve.
Steve lived in Clarendon Road for some years.
I recall snowy times in the past, the two of us hurtling down from the top of that hill on bin bags, cardboard or anything else we could claim to be a wannabe sledge, at night time after a few bevvies with Rick and Caroline who lived nearby, screaming our heads off and laughing like crazy kids! I'm sure we would've raced passed where his tree now stands... beautiful. |
