Problems on UK Decay Communities Sat 11th Dec. 2004

Many may have noticed or experienced problems on the UK Decay Communities website forum yesterday (Sat 12 December) notice were hastily placed up announcing that we had been ‘hacked’!
Users clicking the main Forum index page were greeted by a blank screen with a line of text stating:- “un-root crew 2005 fazendo a sua cabeça por um mundo melhor”

Does this mean anything to anyone?

So were we ‘hacked’?

It seems this may have been the case although we are not absolutely sure yet., we thought (in our naivety) it was only ‘Babylonian’ Bill Gate’s type websites that got attacked in such a manner!
Speaking to SDZ about this he suggested it may not necessarily be any personal attack on UK Decay or its forums but it may possibly been a ‘server-side’ attack on his server.

So where are we now?

With the release over this weekend of the long awaited ‘Nights for Celebration’ CD and orders flooding in, it did seem more than a little ‘coincidental’ in its timing! That and the fact that the whole SDZ server went ‘down’ for several hours added to the headaches!
However the server going down now seems to be coincidental and had been caused by an entirely different reason, which had no connection with our earlier problem.
We are now back up and fully running although we will have to look at potential vulnerabilities and adding extra levels of securities,, there are more than just dodgy viruses and porn sites out there!

UK Decay Communities are just that, a community! And it is hard to understand why someone (apart from the ‘dark’ forces of ‘dodgy’ Government departments or adolescent ‘Know-no-betters’) would want to attack us in such a way. I guess you got to get ‘real’ in this day and age ‘Life is like a jungle sometimes’

Its gotta be those .br brazilians because of the message they posted. Ive patched your forum code with a temporary fix until i secure the whole thing down with the upgrade soon.

"Big Thanks to SDZ!"

It is now certain that we were hacked last weekend
However this wasn't an isolated case or any kind of personal grudge
against UK Decay it seems!

The Whole phpBB Forum user net is under a new threat from
hackers who have exposed vulnerability in the BB software! As is the
case with anyone running a PC these days, we are all under constant
threat from various virus attacks, Trojans, worms, Hackers and other
'dangerous predators' lurking out there in the 'Sea of the World Wide
Web’', we all have to remain 'on guard'.
It seems that the hacking of UK Decay Communities just like the countless
other forums that have been attacked recently, is a new
phenomena that is spreading like wildfire across the various Forums
Communities.

Luckily in our case, just the forum 'index page' was wiped and replaced
with a message by the attackers! They could have done a lot worse,
they could have 'blanked' the whole forum! So we have to be thankful
for small mercy's the 'hacking' was a 'warning shot across our bows'!
We are confident that our members security has not in any way been
compromised and that we can put members minds at rest regarding
their purchase of the CD which is hosted by Pay Pal which utilizes top
level encryption methods.
This BB has now been patched by SDZ and will soon be upgraded to
the latest version, which is secure from this kind of attack!

We apologise for any inconveniences experienced by our users and
would like to take this opportunity to thank SDZ for the long hours that
he has spent sorting this problem out.

Website Update Wednesday 22nd December 2004
This post has been doubled up from the Website news thread

We are still without FTP, which to the layperson means we are unable
to update the main website or load any pictures to the gallery!

Hence the front page not being modified since last week!

SDZ is in the proccess of updating the server and has been really busy
sorting out recent security issues. This is a very tedious and time consuming
venture but we are sure that it will be more than worth the wait!

The forum however has already been updated to the latest version
and is fully working.

I would on behalf of UK Decay Communities like to take this
oppurtunity to thank SDZ services for all the hard work and long hours
behind the scene's done to enable this wonderfull community!
