yeah , they were a funny band. i think by the end they were trying to be a commercial rock band , i recall an interview where the singer was incredibly chuffed mike read played "this side of heaven" on his breakfast show. that last album is ok , but they were hardly ever going to be on top of the pops.
to be honest i reckon their peak was around late 83 , the second peel session and the "gaze" single. i saw a gig at birmingham golden eagle in about sept 83 that was just awesome , blew me away. they were a bit more "arty" then , as time went by they got more "rock" and i never thought it was quite so good.
i'd have loved to have seen them with the original line up , the uk decay tour in may 81 where they were supported by the dark and play dead sounds like it should have been amazing. i guess that was with the original guitarist (who played on the first 2 singles) , i never saw him.
last couple of years (mainly due to this website i guess) i've pulled out a few old "goth" singles and albums but i never seem to go for the play dead stuff , funny cos i was a huge fan once. p |
