OK here's a nice fat question...
I have a Soundcraft Spirit Folio mixer (12 inputs) a nice fast PC and some space in my garage... oh and a copy of Reason an old bass guitar, an ageing (and naff) Roland U220 rack synth and a midi keyboard.
What soundcard and software should I look to get to put together a system able to mostly produce computer based music but with the ability to mix some external sounds through the desk and record to the PC.
I'm thinking that Cubase/rewire would be adequate but not sure and have no clue on the best soundcard... |

Well thats a good set up I would use at least a sound blaster audigy4 which will give you ultra-high quality DACs and an External I/O Hub which provides 6 Stereo Inputs/6 Stereo Outputs,113dB SNR 24-bit/192kHz DACs for superior 24-bit ADVANCED HD audio clarity
There are a lot of cards out there go for one with large Jack inputs, optical and firewire if you want to be really professional. As for software in my humble opinion you should use cubase nuendo or sx both very capable of doing what you want to do. have fun PJ.. |

If you got about a grand to spare mebe sell your spirit folio or watever.
How about one of these:
The Yamaha o1x is the bollox mate!
It IS your soundcard
It is a hardware mixer ( will work without the PC turned on)
with balanced and unbalanced inputs
It has a host of DSP effects & goodies
(taking the strain from your PC)
It is a Mixer controll panel for Cubase, Logic etc etc
It is a controll panel for your Soft synths
It has all the advantages of digital mixing
It will interface nicely with Cubase, Logic, etc etc
Ahh if only I had a Grand!
Yep for me Cubase SX/ Reason is a nice combination
with a number of vst instruments
It not only is a MIDI sytem it is a multitrack recorder
environment with incredible possibilities
If you were to get just one software synth to go with it
I would choose Halion which is a sampler.
So get that dusty Bass guitar out and start recording again!
