A soundfont is just a glorified way of describing an instrument
such as a piano or a drumkit or bass guitar etc.
A bit outmoded these days, developed and supported by Creative
the makers of the soundblaster sound cards for the pc.
An example of a soundfont is a piano bank whence maybe 2 or more samples per octave are taken and layered to make a full range spread across the keyboard.
Sound font's are just one manufacturers way of making up such a collection.
These days you can get more use out of these old Sound fonts by importing them into a VST instrument such as Halion.
Which brings me onto VST Plug-ins, Halion is a VST Plugin Sampler.
VST Plug-ins are virtual (software versions) instruments and outboard devices that can be loaded up into contemporary music software
i.e. Cubase etc.
They are software emulations of hardware devices to be found in Studio's and in the bedrooms of music producer's.
You can still pay a lot of money for these devices as they are pretty realistic..
VST plug-ins are usually associated with Steinberg Cubase although many other music software manufactorers utilise the format.
hope thats been of help.
