That's Interesting!
ccs wrote: | I read so much crappalus rubbish about Clophill Church and it`s so called links with the occult and black magic. This is how all the rumours started.
All of this is documented in the newspapers of the time.
My friend and i lived in Leagrave, and at weekends often went on exploration cycle rides into the surrounding countryside. One such sunday we cycled out to chicksands american airbase, instead of going back down the main road, we took a detour through the village of Clophill, it was around 3.30pm we looked over and saw the ruined church on the hill. We decided to leave our bikes on the grass verge and walk across the fields up to the church to take a look. We entered at the back of the church yard and walked around to the window at the side, where looking through the first window we could see a human scull on a pole in the ground. Surrounding the scull was the blood and feathers of a some bird and on the walls, drawn in blood, various markings.
Although by now very frightened we walked along further to the church door and entered the church, there around the bottom of the pole we could see human bones laid out in a pattern.
we took fright and instead of heading back to our bikes, went through the gate entrance to the church, we were only a few paces outside, when were stopped by a man and woman, we were only young, but even then they appeared strange and very angry to us, what followed was to change our lives forever.
The above is obviously only a brief account, and i have not finished the story.
After the event the church was besieged with students and people from all over the country and world.
I personally know that the church is not haunted, the mind is a powerfull thing and imaginations run wild. I often walk up past the church now,and feel nothing. The one thing i would ask is that people now stop talking crap
about the church and leave it and the people of clophill alone.
The problem really is that there are very few people with any faith or respect for anything at all, however those with no respect are those most likely to have weak minds and are most succeptable to harbouring long lasting paranoid thoughts of having been cursed for entering such places.
My advice is , stay away, if you go there merely to abuse a sacred place, then you must accept the consequences of your imagination. |
That's Interesting! please, Oh please give us more
of your story.
The very fact that your incident' at Clophill Church 'was to change our
lives forever' makes your story most interesting.
The band UK Decay were to have their destiny changed forever. after
the photo session!
You hit the nail on the head
The simple fact that the church now sadly lies abandoned, gives
weight to the argument that this place has some kind of 'effect'
on those that experience it
As it did to you!
Clophill Church is on, or not far from the 'Greensands ridgeway' path
and our goverment advise that we should all 'Get healthy and take
walks in our glorious countryside - and visit our heritage' !
Thats exactly what we humble urban folk need to do
Without imagination's running wild we would not have had Shakespeare,
Tolkien, Edgar Allen Poe, H.P Lovecarft et all....you name it.
If Clophill Church had the fortune of being situated in the USA,
there would by now be a whole town and commercial community
built up around it, complete with Hotels, guided tours and themepark etc. lol
It couldn't happen here, ..could it ?

I live in Clophill and have done for nearly 2 years now. I have never been to the church and have no desire to. The skatepark in Clophill is much more alluring to me. Clophill is a nice place and I have to drive near the church to get to work. I have never witnessed anything out of the ordinary, but I must also point out that I drive near by. Driving means I can't be looking over there and only near by, not right next to. Maybe I will go up there soon, just to see what all the fuss is about. I am not saying I believe the stories and I am not saying I don't believe them, but it is just strange to have such a major fuss over something I live right next to yet have never actually been to _________________ Red |

Hi me and my friends had a weird experience.
We went up to the opening to the lane at clophill at around 9.30pm but then got scared......so we decided to not got up there cause it was pitch black (i dont know how them residents live on that lane).
Anyway we drove on down to the end of the village where we could see the church on the hill by the trees, there was a bit of a distance but we could see it.
After looking at the churh for about 10 mins i said to my friends are my eyes going funny can u see that? What we could see was on top of the church was this black thing just bouncing around - it remined me of a black binbag just bouncing in the wind...but the thing is clophill churh has no cover on top. I just put it down to ppl doing thier rituals and it was black smoke. The only thing was the smoke was not rising.
On either sides of the churn we could see 2 black things which looked like 'sticks dancing' they were just moving....we though they were flags but after a while of looking at this, it could not have been.
We went down the road and came bk to have a break but we came bk again and it had got worse.
There was still these black figures dancing on the sides of the top of the church plus there were 3 white clouds hanging around the church...they were not clouds as they were not moving....it was windy that night.
We didnt think nothing of it untill we rang someone who confirmed it was ghosts...without us even saying anything.
If you go up there any night u will see this......it is bad spirts and I say to anyone who is thinking of going up there....NOT TO GO |

1986. Car full of people. Speeding. Pissed up. Drove there one night. Seemed like a good idea. Much giggling. Ghost jokes. Got there. To say there was a sense of dread about the place would be an understatement. We got out. We stopped. Something was scaring us all shitless. Our laughter had evaporated in an instant. Got back in car. Drove home fast. Very spooked. Very quiet. Have to say have no idea what it was, but would not do it again. x. |

I just registered so I could reply to this thread.
I was born and grew up in Clophill, at the bottom of the lane that leads up to the church, I lived there for over 30 years from 1965.
The history of the place is different from the previous posts here.
The village was originally around the church, untill the plague came.
They burned the village to the ground and then moved down the hill to it`s present location.
We used to play in and around the church all the time as kids, even at night.
I have never seen anything remotley ungodly going on there and neither has anyone else who lived in the village. Apart from grave robbers that is.
Sorry to spoil your images of witch craft and devil worshipping, but it didn`t happen.
Oh and Dead mans hill is a good 2 miles from the church, that place did see a few murders though.
James Hanratty (the last man to be hanged in the UK) killed his victim at dead mans Hill.
The pyjama murders in the 70`s. Dead mans hill.
Another body turned up there in the late 70`s aswell. |

A surreal visit to Cainho with pics
Much earlier in this topic the ancient nearly forgotten predecessor
to the village of Clophill complete with it's long abandoned castle
and the last vestige of an ancient Norman/English barony was
touched upon.
The ancient abandoned town of Cainho lies about a mile and a half
south east of the centre of Clophill village. Today all that is to be found
left from town is Cainho manor and the ruins of a Motte and bailey castle.
After the battle of Hastings in 1066 William the conqueror did not head
straight for the capitol London to seize his throne. He first had his army bypass
the city to the south until eventually he got to the River Thames. There
he followed it northwest, through the Chiltern hills at Goring Gap.
He then followed the Chilterns northeast until he got to Linslade, nearby,
he split his army into two, sending one southeast through Houghton Regis
and Luton and then London and the Crown. The other army he sent
northeast, Cainho was only a days march in this direction. On arriving
William granted the then significant town of Cainho, to one of his top
generals Geoffrey de Montbray, who went on to manage an empire of
over 300 manors from there.
Later, an ambitious Knight who was said to have been a member of
the Knights Templar, Nigel d’Albini married into the Montbray family
and built the Castle that now lies in ruins. He took over control of the vast
estates and Manor’s and started the line of the Barony of Cainho which
became established as an important power base during the feudal period.
Nigel’s son, Roger d’Aubigny went on to join in the Crusades and was captured
by Saladin who won a ransom and was released. Many of the d’Aubigny’s
became important Knights of the Temple and played a significant part in
developing the Knights Templar power in the south east midlands until they were
finally disbanded in the early 14th century. A little later in that century the plague,
devastated the town of Cainho which sat straddled around the now decaying castle,
the remaining folk relocating to a new location about a mile
to the north (The location of the crumbling Church of St. Marys of
Clophill).
For further information on this subject please visit the excellent Dave Binns article
‘Clophill Echoes’ on the Earthtransition site.
Anyway we decided in our inimitable fashion to send our photocyclist to
the Castle to get some photo’s…….
The sheep seem to be the only inhabitants these days!
It is more than possible that under the Motte lies is a much older sacred mound.
This surreal view outlines the field undulations of the former town
staddling the old castle ramparts.
This ancient form, like something out of Lovecrafts Cthulu exists there
More Cainho Field earth undulations that betray the medievil town
Cainho manor
The Cainho Skull
Like some incredible beast out of the Cthulu Mythos this beast stands
guard on the medievil castle ramparts.
Now it's the sheep's turn to patrol..
Clophill Church a mile to the north, a bit vague but a little right of centre
skyline, from Cainho motte.
The return of the Cainho Skull.
A closer inspection of the Cainho Cthulu
A Cainho Sunset.
An Ariel overview of the area with Cainho castle marked by the 'I' icon
on the bottom southern end and Clophill Church of St. Marys on the
top to the north marked by the 'I' icon.
The village of Clophill runs accross the middle of the image.

Are you lot seriously saying that there's a place near Luton that's more scary than the town centre at night? As if... |
